DESTINATIONS

Above, towering green cliffs and lush tropical foliage dominate the scenic coast of Hawaii's "Big Island." You can find world-famous surfing beaches along the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii's most populous island, and home to most of its gay life.

The Hawaiian Islands are a world apart in the central Pacific Ocean, startlingly remote. Honolulu is 2,398 miles southwest of San Francisco (the closest continental point), 3,818 miles southeast of Tokyo, and 5,067 miles north of Sydney.

70% of Hawaii's population lives in Oahu, where Honolulu is the capital city, the principal port, and the business, financial, educational and tourism center of the State. The majority of gay nightclubs and businesses are in the Waikiki area, Honolulu's urban beach resort famous for its stretch of reef-protected white sand beach and variety of hotels, restaurants, shops and nightlife.

Hawaii's distinctive mix of cultures is the result of the coexistence and blending of people from all over the world who have settled here. There's no real ethnic or religious majority and a high degree of acceptance of gays and lesbians.

Check out Matthew Link's new gay travel guide to Hawaii. Link, who lived in Hawaii for years and is the Editorial Director for OutTraveler Magazine, takes an in-depth look at gay life and history in Hawaii.
