About a 3 1/2 hour drive north from Banff along one of the planet’s most scenic roadways, the Icefields Parkway, is Jasper, Canada’s largest National Park. With routes such as the North and South Boundary trails – each over 160 km – and shorter walks along the Opal Hills loop or up the Watchtower to Mt. Edith Cavell, there are over 1,000 km of developed trails to ramble along.
With its shimmering blue lakes, long ridge-top hikes, canyons, bike trails and a world class golf resort, Jasper is a haven reminiscent of a more peaceful and more rugged time. It is also a refuge for much wildlife including bighorn sheep, elk, deer, and moose, which even feel free wandering its streets.
While there, be sure to take a quick trip to nearby Maligne Canyon, which is beautiful in either the summer or the winter. In the cold weather it is transformed from the cool wet walls towering over the frothing torrent of the summer into a gorge of icy spires and pipes.
